How Our Spheres
Are
Hand Cut And Shaped;
Selected And Made From A Variety Of
Southern African Raw Stone Materials
- To
produce our stone spheres we source our
stone from far and wide through out Southern
Africa,
only
selecting the best; based on colour, size and quality.
- Not all rocks are the same;
they break up into different shapes and
sizes. In forming a round ball from an odd shaped rock means first
cutting it into a square, using an electric "diamond edged" circular
saw. This eliminates much of the material to give it the correct
proportions. It has to be large
enough to produce the required sized sphere free from any
irregularities.
- Before
the shaping process begins.
We need to see and maximize
each rocks potential. To identify it's suitability, the cut
stone
is wet to highlight it's colour, to see if it has intrusions, cracks or
flaws. Wetting gives you an idea what the finished product
will look like; as this exposes it's inner qualities.
- Some
back ground info.
We are working with gemstones formed hundreds of millions of years ago
during the earths creation. Over time the bed rock has been exposed to
conditions of extreme force, pressure, heat and therefor change. It is
no wonder that good
material is hard to come by. We experience many disappointments once
the rock is
cut.. Any material not to our satisfaction, is immediately
rejected or down sized.
- Shaping
and polishing.
If we are satisfied at this stage, the corners are now cut away and the
grinding begins. Hand shaped against motorized emery wheels, we produce
the rounded stone balls.
The surface scratches are then removed using finner grained abrasive
wheels. The final polished finish is achieved using buffers that are
covered in a very fine polishing paste. This complete process is a very
time consuming and laborious task.
The
End Result:
- What is shown to you here are our selected produces that are very
unique and difficult to
come by.
It
is worth our while because we love to discover, shape and then share
these ornaments of natural beauty...
